Crane operator certification is valid for five years.
Candidates must complete all of their recertification requirements within one year prior to the expiration date of their certification.
Candidates whose certification expires, will be required to retake the full written and practical examinations over again.
Certified candidates may take their recertification examinations up to one year prior to their certification(s) expiring. Regardless of when the candidate takes the test(s) within that year. The new 5 year certification period will begin from the expiration date of the candidate’s prior certification.
Example
If original certification was issued 6-1-2005
Candidate must recertify between 6-1-2009 and 6-1-10 if the candidate recertifies anytime between these dates their recertification would expire on the same date 6-1-15

Each specialty exam consists of 6 general questions and 4 load chart calculation questions. All candidates are required to take the core examination regardless of the specialty(s) in which they wish to be recertified.
Recertification candidates are permitted two attempts to pass the recertification core and specialty exams before their certification expires. If candidates are unsuccessful after the two attempts, candidates must take and pass the regular core and specialty exams.
Candidates who are not certified in all specialties may add a new specialty at the same time as they take their recertification examinations by taking the full examination in that specialty (IAI the testing company charges extra for this.)
